Health Education Makes a Difference
Activity & Eating: Linking Together for Optional Health and Fitness

During October and November of 1998, field-testing was conducted with both Consumer and Health Professional audiences to evaluate the effectiveness of Dairy Council of California's new Activity & Eating program.

"Activity & Eating - Linking together for Optimal Health and Fitness" focuses on the individual -- by increasing knowledge and awareness and allowing them to put this new information into practice. This is achieved by doing a self-assessment of current food choices and activity levels and allowing individuals to determine what types of changes they would like to make.

Consumer Methodology and Results

As with all of Dairy Council's nutrition programs, this self-instructional program uses a behavior change model to help instill positive lifestyle changes. However, this program is unique in that it goes beyond nutrition and combines physical activity with sensible food choices as a strategy for optimal health and fitness. We wanted to find out if this approach is useful to consumers and if they planned to make any changes as a result of completing this paper and pencil program.

A majority of our 73 consumer respondents were female. Most were between the ages of 26 and 49 years and 80% were Caucasian, followed by Hispanics, then African Americans. Most (86%) found the program easy to use and felt that it contained "just the right amount of information". Favorite sections included the "Reality Check" (a self-assessment section) and "Weight Management" tips.

An overwhelming 77% said that they would do something different about their diet and exercise habits. Behaviors that individuals identified they would like to change included to "stop skipping meals", to "eat a variety of foods" and to "use 10 minute increments three times a day to set an exercise pattern".

Health Professional Methodology and Results

A total of 1500 Health Professionals (physicians, registered dietitians, nurses, health educators and others) who use the Activity & Eating program with clients were surveyed. A remarkable 30% of those surveyed responded and of the returned surveys, 200 were analyzed.

Health Professionals reported using this Activity & Eating program with clients for wellness in addition to the health concerns of diabetes, weight management, cardiovascular disease. Most respondents (86%) said the program was "easy to use" and contained "just the right amount of information". A majority (84%) gave the highest ratings (a 4 or a 5) when asked to evaluate each section of the program.

Health Professionals had the following comments about the Activity & Eating program:

  • "This booklet is very useful; our patients really enjoy the information."
  • "This is an excellent tool, thank you for keeping it free of charge."
  • "Nicely done, attractive format, good balance of information."

Discussion

This self-instructional booklet helps adult women and men understand the connection between two important lifestyle factors - physical activity and healthful food choices - in achieving optimal health. Activity & Eating also encourages a self-assessment of current food choices and activity levels and allows individuals to determine which changes they would like to make. This approach clearly inspires a majority of people going through this program to say they plan to make some changes.

Although we have yet to study the long term changes attributable to the use of this program, Health Professionals and Consumers alike give this program high marks.
