Methodology and Results
As with all of Dairy Council's nutrition
programs, this self-instructional program uses a behavior change
model to help instill positive lifestyle changes in both parents
and their children. We wanted to find out if physicians felt this
approach is useful to the parents of young children they see in
their practices.
A total of 126 physicians working in
family practice or pediatrics completed the survey. Almost all (97%)
felt that parents would understand the information presented in
the booklet either very well or fairly well. Likewise, nearly all
of the physicians (99%) felt that the information from each section
would be very useful or somewhat useful for parents in guiding their
children's food choices.
Less than half (46%) of the physicians
surveyed currently give nutrition materials to parents of preschool
children. A majority (95%) of physicians felt that this booklet
will help them in educating parents about their children's nutritional
needs.
Physicians had the following comments
about the Making Meals Matter program:
- "Concise, easy to read."
- "Colorful, appealing appearance
and pictures; the various colors and pictures make it attractive."
- "Thank you for making this booklet;
it can save us some time."
- "I would give this to every patient
if I had enough of them; this is just what I've been looking for."
